Shots is a homozygous tobiano mare sired by Shots Flying Spark and out of a daughter of Grays Starlight. I was told when I bought her she was broke as a 2 and 3 year old but then has spent the rest of her career as a broodmare. Shots absolutely loves the broodmare life and is very happy to be left alone to her own devices. She is a sucker for a good brush, scratches, and food of course!
Shots had been a range broodmare before coming to our program and it was clear that being caught regularly, dewormed, and trimmed was not part of her usual routine. She has come a very long way in our much more hands-on program and has adapted well to being handled much more regularly. She can now be caught easily, dewormed, and vaccinated, and is a dream to load. The only sticky part is trimming her feet, particularly the backs. We have got them done but it isn’t every time the farrier is out. We are not in to drugging or tying up legs so have chosen to leave her back feet when she is not cooperating (full disclosure, she has kicked my farrier). Fortunately, she has great feet and they hold up well.
We do not own a stud so she has been AI’d in our program and has caught 2/3 times on the first cycle with fresh semen. We have not attempted frozen with her. She foals out easily on her own and is a great dam. She milks well and is appropriately protective of her foals. I have attended her deliveries, imprinted the foal and handled it in the first week of life with no issues.
